Trip Page: Cedros Island Baja Mexico Kayak Fishing

Cedros Island off the coast of Baja California, Mexico

Cedros Island is home to ridiculous trophy calico bass fishing followed by an armada of sport fish that will challenge the best of the best. The world record broomtail grouper grouper was caught on a kayak in front of very own eyes. This fishery has multiple hot spots that produce when others don’t so you are always within earshot of another hot bite.

Late Spring/Early Summer

May through July is a great time to fish the island. The calicos are spawning and are very aggressive this time of year. You may encounter wind and fog keeping you on the front side of the island. Not to worry as typically the best fishing is along the other side.

These tips brought to you by Jeff Mariani owner of Cedros Kayak Fishing.

Late Summer

The most popular months are by far August – October. Fishing is excellent and the days are often filled with light winds and lots of sun.

These tips brought to you by Jeff Mariani owner of Cedros Kayak Fishing.

Rods and reels are available for rent at an additional charge. If you want to bring your own tackle, please adhere to the following:

* Do not put your rods in a large rod tube
* Wrap your rods and protect the tips
* Overweight fees seem to be subjective, however they are not outrageous

Live Bait Setup

We fish a Shimano Trinidad 20 star drag reel paired with a stout Shimano Terez 6’6 ft. rod built for 100-200 lb braid. Our reel is loaded with 80 lb braid and a 50 ft 60 lb mono topshot.

Suggested Specs

Drag: 25 lbs +
Backing: 65 lbs +
Topshot: 60 lbs mono +
Leader: 40 lbs +

Fish Village Tip: Pre-make multiple 5 ft 40 or 50 lb fluoro leaders with a barrel swivel on on end and a 3/0 hook on the other end. We use Owner Flyliner 3/0 hooks for our setups. Pack each pre-made leader in Ziploc.

Catching Bait (Setup)

You can use sabikis to catch greenback mackerel or sardines. You can also use small yellowtail as bait for broomtail grouper.

Jigging Setup

We fish a Shimano Saragosa 8000 spinning setup paired with a Shimano Tremar jigging rods built for 80-150 lb braid. Our reel is loaded with 65 lb braid topped with a 5-7 ft 60 lb fluoro leader.

Suggested Specs

Drag: 25 lbs +
Backing: 60 lbs +
Leader: 60 lbs +

Plan on bringing heavy jigs 200-300 grams for fast moving currents and smaller jigs for shallower water and slower drop rates 80-150 grams. If you do not trust your jig hooks, upgrade before you head down. Flutter jigs, flat falls, slow jigs, knife jigs, heavy yo/yo irons all work well.

Popping/Surface Setup

We fish a Shimano Saragosa 10000 spinning setup paired with a stout Shimano Terez 7’0 ft. rod built for 100-200 lb braid. Our reel is loaded with 80 lb braid topped with a 5-7 ft 60-80 lb fluoro leader.

Suggested Specs

Drag: 30 lbs +
Backing: 80 lbs +
Leader: 60 lbs +

We use Halco 135 and 160 sized poppers and Salas 7X surface irons. Large surface lures will work great there. Mackerel patterns and sardine patterns work well.
